executive
the collective group of PM, cabinet and junior ministers which together forms the government
what are the 4 components of the executive
- PM
- Cabinet, senior ministers who run government departments and are appointed by the PM
- Junior ministers, assist the senior minister
- Civil Service, permanent officials who carry out the day to fay running of government departments
3 roles of the executive
proposing a budget –> allocating funds, letting the commons and citizens know, formality
proposing legislation
making policy decisions within laws and the budget –> managing state run services, foreign policy decisions
the royal prerogative
a set of powers and privileges belonging to the monarch that are exercised by the PM and/or cabinet
–> granting honours or legal pardons
4 sources of the PM’s authority
traditional authority —> monarch giving them the royal prerogative, royal approval
party —> PM is always leader of the largest party in the commons
parliament —> the larger the majority in parliament, the more power the PM has
patronage —> those who aspire to be in high places in government will be loyal to the one who can put them there, Jeremy Hunt didn’t vote against the party whip
people —> general election - but winners bonus du to FPTP but party leader is also crucial to an election

hiring and firing ministers and leading cabinet
chief foreign policy maker/to negotiate treaties
commander in chief
set the direction of the governments economic policy
