Exercise 6 Flashcards
(27 cards)
Photosynthesis formula
12H2O + 6CO2 —> 6O2 + C6H12O6 + 6H2O
Light reaction
produces oxygen we breathe, ATP & NADPH
Dark Reaction
CO2 + ATP + NADPH —> C6H12O6
Where can the dark reaction occur?
In light or dark
What do plants store extra sugar as?
Starch
Why do we see color?
When light hits a pigmented surface, some wavelengths are absorbed and others are reflected/transmitted. The colors that are reflected are the colors that we see.
What reflects the colors?
the photosynthetic pigment chlorophyll
Absorption spectrum
a spectrum of light waves absorbed by a particular pigment
Order of the color pigments
Yellow Light Green Dark Green Gray Orange
Yellow
xanthophyll
Light green
Chl B
Dark Green
Chl A
Gray
Phaeophytin
Orange
Carotene
Autotrophs
synthesize organic molecules from inorganic carbon dioxide (make their own food)
Heterotrophs
rely directly or indirectly on autotrophs for their nutritional carbon and metabolic energy
What happens during the light reaction?
The H2O breaks off and becomes O2
A device used for viewing the spectrum of light is a
spectroscope
The raw materials used for photosynthesis include
CO2 + H2O
Products and byproducts of photosynthesis do NOT include
CO2
A paper chromatogram is useful for
Separating pigments based on their physical characteristics
What pigments would you find in a geranium leaf
Chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, carotenoids
Which reagent would you use to determine the distribution of carbohydrate stored in leaves?
Benedict’s solution
An example of a heterotrophic organism is
a human
