Exercise Testing Flashcards
(37 cards)
No regular exercise
NO Disease and No Signs and symptoms
medical clearance not necessary
No regular exercise
known disease and asymptomatic
medical clearance recommended
no regular exercise
S&S suggestive of disease
medical clearance recommended
ACSM guidelines for light intensity
30-39% HRR or VO2R
RPE 9-11
slight increase in HR and breathing
ACSM guidelines for Moderate Exercise
40-59% HRR, RPE 12-13
noticeable increase in HR and breathing
ACSM guidelines for Vigorous Exercise
> 60% HRR RPE>14
substantial increases in HR and breathing
Participates in regular exercise
NO disease & NO S&S
no medical clearance required
Known Disease but asymptomatic
no medical clearance necessary for moderate intensity recommended for vigorous
any S&S of Disease
discontinue exercise and seek medical clearance
absolute contraindication
no exercise should not be performed until their condition is stabilized
relative contraindications
patients may be tested only after evaluation of the risk/benefit ratio
signs and symptoms for ending an exercise test
fatigue. lightheadness, confusion, ataxia, pallor, cyanosis, severe dyspnea, nausea, onset of angina
test termination CV signs
fall in BP below resting levels
excessive hypotension (>20 mmhg drop in systolic)
excessive BP increase (>220 & >110 mmhg
inappropriate bradycardia
define a predictive test
sub maximal test used to predict maximal aerobic capacity
define a performance test
involve measuring the responses to standardized physical activities that are typically encountering in everyday life
assumptions of predictive tests
assumes steady stay HR at each exercise intensity
assumes linear relationship between HR VO2 & work
assumes the mechanical efficiency during cycling and treadmill
assumes maximal HR
advantages of astrand rhyming cycle test
most frequently used submax cycle test
uses HR which is easy to measure
disadvantages of astrand ryhming cycle test
can have a large margin of error in predicted VO2 max
influenced by variability in max HR
influenced by variability in max HR
Cycling can cause lower-extremity discomfort in some individuals
advantages of sub max treadmill walking test
suitable for testing people in clinical and research settings
disadvantages of sub max treadmill walking test
further research needed to validate the test in people with various disease in older adults
limited data on sensitivity to detect changes
12 min run test advantages
no specialized equipment
allows more than one person to be tested at a time
good for those with high level of functioning but may not be appropriate for a rehab setting
12 min run test disadvantages
developed using a male pop
pacing can be challenging
wording of test could make it maximal test
doesnt account for body weight
20 M shuttle test advantages
lots of stages = wide range of fitness levels to be tested
requires little equipment and multiple people can be tested simultaneously
20 M shuttle test disadvantages
frequent stopping, starting and pivoting may not be suitable for everyone
pacing might be difficult for some
testing criteria needed to ensure that the test is sub-maximal
