Experiment 8 Flashcards
(23 cards)
Goal
Determine oxidizing capacity of commercial bleach
Most common active ingredient
Hypochlorite ion (ClO-)
How does hypochlorite ion work
As an oxidizing agent (LEO) removes electrons from the stain
Removing electrons from stain =
Destroying substances that absorb visible light
When does material become whiter
when light absorbing material has been destroyed (light no longer being absorbed)
How many redox are we using
2
Eq 1: what is in excess
Potassium Iodide (KI)
Eq 2: excess/acid
H+ in excess, acid is H2S04 (sulfuric acid)
How is I2 produced in solution determined?
Through titration with a standardized thiosulfate solution
Mole ratio at equivalence point of titration
(1 mol ClO-) : (2 mol S2O3 2-)
Titrating with
Na2S203
Amt. bleach
1-1.2 grams
Colour change after adding 2g KI
NONE
Colour change after adding 10ml H2S04
BROWN (indicates presence of iodine)
Titrate with Na2S2O3 until….
Brown to pale yellow
After pale yellow…add:
5 drops of starch indicator
Endpoint:
found drop by drop after adding starch….black JUST disappears
Moles thiosulfate
n=cv (with titer volumes and given conc of tiosulfate)
Moles hypochlorite
2 th : 1 hc
Wght% sodium hypochlorite
(mass sodium hypochlorite / mass bleach) x100
Mean wt.percent
from all 3 trials / 3
Standard deviation
(wt-mean) - summed
sum / n-1
