Experimental designs Flashcards
(14 cards)
What are the three experimental designs?
Independent groups, repeated measures, matched pairs
What is independent groups?
Different participants in different conditions
In independent groups, what does the control group act as?
A baseline measure
What is repeated measures?
All participants take part in all conditions
What can repeated measures be affected by? How do we overcome this?
Order effects, overcome by counterbalancing
What is counterbalancing?
Half do A-B, half do B-A
What are order effects?
Practice, fatigue
What is matched pairs?
Different people in each condition but they have been matched on a relevant characteristic to someone in the other group
What is a strength of repeated measures?
Results not subject to participant variables
What is a weakness of repeated measures?
Risk of order effects
What is a strength of independent groups?
Order effects cannot be observed
What is a weakness of independent groups?
Risk of participant variables
What is a strength of matched pairs?
Order effects cannot be observed
What is a weakness of matched pairs?
Matching is a complex process, difficult to match participants identically
