Experiments Flashcards
What is a field experiment (4)
Experiments conducted in a real world situation. Participants are usually unaware of their involvement
What is a lab experiment (1)
conducted in a controlled environment
What is a Quasi Experiment (2)
Not classed as a true experiment because the researcher is taking advantage of pre-existing conditions e.g age
Benefits/Disadvantages of Quasi Experiment
Participants often unaware so likely to not be artificial. However harder to establish casual relationships because the IV isn’t being directly manipulated
Benefits/Disadvantages of a field experiment (4)
High in Ecological Validity.
However harder to control confounding variables, and time consuming. Not usually possible to get consent and debrief
Benefits/Disadvantages of a Lab experiment (2)
Easier to control
But likely produces non ecologically valid findings
What is the most common type of experiment used in psychology and why
Quasi because it is the best practically and ethically
Experimental Design
How participants are allocated to different groups in an experiment.
Independent measure design
this is where different participants are used in each condition of the independent variable. So each condition includes a different group of participants
Repeated Measure Design
the same participants take part in each condition. So each condition of the experiment includes the same group of people
Matched Pairs Design
pairs of participants are matched in terms of key variables e.g age or gender
