Q

What is the degree of a polynomial?

Quel est le degré d’un polynôme ?

A

The exponent of the variable with the highest exponent of the polynomial. Usually represented with n in general form equations for any polynomial, where the next exponent is then expressed with n-1 etc.

Q

Describe how to create a graph of any degree polynomial using the linear model.

A

Cubics have two directions that the wheel of the car is turned while generally following the idea of the slope from the linear equivalent.

Quintics have four phases of the wheel being turned either right or left.

The degree is always one more than the wheel directions.

Q

A polynomial with degree 9 has how many wheel directions?

A

8

Wheel directions are often referred to as turning points, though that term is not clear enough to grasp the meaning, so look for wheel directions and use that number for questions asking for turning points.

8

Q

How do you make the points appear on the graph once you have them in the regression list?

A

2nd, y= (to access stat plot), enter, highlight on, enter, graph

Zoom, stat

The above will help the zoom display the points you have entered clearly

Make sure your equations in ‘y =’ are deleted so that you can see your points clearly

Q

How do you know that it is a polynomial function and not something else?

A

Cannot contain:
- roots of variables
- negative powers of a variable (same thing as dividing by a variable)
- fractional powers of a variable (same thing as roots of variables)
- coefficients which are non-real

17
Q

What is the constant term?

A

The term independent of x, which is a0

18
Q

Explain why the polynomial function P(x) = 7 has a degree of zero

What kind of function is this called?

A

7x⁰ = 7 so the leading degree is 0

This is a constant function because the output value remains constant

19
Q

How do you classify polynomials by the number of terms?

A
  • monomial (one term)
  • binomial (two terms)
  • trinomial (three terms)
20
Q

How do you classify polynomials by type of coefficients?

A
  • integral polynomial function = integers used for coefficients, not rational etc.
  • rational polynomial functions = rational numbers can also be used along with integers for the coefficients
  • real polynomial functions = any real number may be used for the coefficients
