Q

Explain two consequences of the sand creek massacre.

A
  1. the amount of lives lost. On November 29th 1864, Chivington and his men launched an attack on the camp of unsuspecting Native Americans, scattering and hunting down men, women, and children. This led to the death of 148 Native Americans, many of these being women and children. This incident further increased tensions in the West between the US Army and the Native Americans, as eyewitness discredited chivington and his men when it became clear they had perpetrated a massacre.
  2. the little arkansas treaty. in 1865, a new treaty was made which moved the cheyenne and arapho nations to large reservations south of the arkansas river. as well as this, the government made generous payments to survivors of the massacre as reparations. however, after the civil war ended, the government backed out of the deal and they were moved to reservations half the size.
