16
Q

What is the effect of the land use change boundary?

A

Decreased biodiversity

17
Q

What is the solution to the land use change boundary?

A

Less meat, efficient crops

18
Q

What caused the nitrate and phosphate boundary?

A

Fertilizers, the Haber process

19
Q

What is the effect of the nitrate and phosphate boundary?

A

Acidificaton and eutrophication

20
Q

What is the solution to the nitrate and phosphate boundary?

A

Reduce fertilizers, disrupt the nitrogen cycle

21
Q

What caused the ozone planetary boundary?

A

CFCs in aerosols and fridges

22
Q

What is the effect of the ozone boundary?

A

Destruction/holes in the layer, UV radiation

23
Q

What is the solution to the ozone boundary?

A

Montreal Protocol - banned CFCs

24
Q

What caused the inorganic pollution planetary boundary?

A

Metals and radioactive materials, microplastics

25
What is the effect of the inorganic pollution boundary?
More chemicals in the food chain (accumulation)
26
What is the solution to the inorganic pollution boundary?
DDT banned
27
What has the increase in agriculture caused?
Hedge removal = decrease biodiversity Monoculture (grow one crop) = less habitats, minerals from same depth of soil taken, more fertilisers, etc Overgrazing = reduced water drainage
28
What is deforestation used for?
Timber Farming Roads
29
What are the consequences of deforestation?
Soil erosion, flooding, cold soil which attracts denitrifying bacteria, less rainfall, habitat destruction, more Co2
30
Give advantages and disadvantages of fish farming?
Reduced carbon footprint, raising fish better the pork, overcrowding causes disease to spread, pollution of pesticides = eutrophication, antibiotic resistance, high resource usage, if escape will out compete
31
What is environmental monitoring?
Physical and environmental measurements made over a period of time. e.g. air quality, soil, water quality (chemical - pH, microbes) used to monitor the effect and impact of conservation
32
Give an example of environmental monitoring and when it is needed
An environmental Impact Assessment is required before construction projects. Also used to make political decisions.
