Extracting Metals And Equilibria Flashcards
(9 cards)
Reactivity series increasing order?
Gold, silver, copper, hydrogen, iron, zinc, carbon, aluminium, magnesium, calcium, sodium, potassium
Metals that react with water?
Potassium, sodium, calcium
Metals that react with dilute acid?
Potassium, sodium, calcium, magnesium, aluminium, carbon, zinc, iron
Oxidation and reduction in terms of oxygen?
Oxidisation means gain oxygen
Reduction means loss oxygen
How can you extract metals less reactive than carbon?
They can be extracted by their oxides by reduction with carbon (heated)
How to extract a metal more reactive than carbon?
Electrolysis but it is more expensive due to large amount of energy needed
Phytoextraction?
Plants absorb metal compounds, through their roots
They concentrate compounds into their shoots and leaves
The plants can be burned to produce an ash that contains the metal compounds
Bacterial extraction?
Some bacteria absorb metal compounds
They produce solutions called leachates which contain them
Scrap iron can be used to obtain the metal
Why recycling metals is better?
Requires less energy than to extract from ores
Mining ores is bad for the environment
Metals can be reused
