eye Flashcards
(19 cards)
What is the primary function of the eye?
The organ responsible for vision, picking up light rays from sources or reflections.
How many different colors can the eye recognize?
About 2000 different colours.
What is the sclera?
The white of the eye, rigid, opaque, and 1mm thick, protecting and giving shape to the eye.
What is the function of the choroid?
Middle layer of the eye with blood vessels that provide nourishment.
What is the retina?
The inner layer of the eye, covered with light-sensitive nerve cells that transmit impulses.
What is the blind spot?
The area where the retina meets the optic nerve, not sensitive to light.
What shape is the cornea?
Dome-shaped, clear, and rigid.
What is the role of the iris?
Extension of the choroid that regulates the amount of light entering the eye through the pupil.
What is the function of the lens?
A flattened sphere that focuses light rays on the retina.
What is the aqueous humour?
Transparent liquid that fills the space between the cornea and the lens.
What is the vitreous humour?
Transparent jelly-like substance that fills the space between the lens and the retina.
What happens to the pupil in strong light?
The iris dilates and the pupil shrinks.
What happens to the pupil in low light?
The iris contracts and the pupil gets bigger.
What is accommodation in terms of the lens?
The ability of the lens to change its shape to focus light rays for a sharp image.
What type of light rays reach the eye when looking at distant objects?
Essentially parallel light rays.
What are the two types of photoreceptors in the retina?
- Cones
- Rods
What is the function of cones?
Responsible for day vision and color perception.
What is the function of rods?
Responsible for night vision.
Fill in the blank: The retina is __________ in color.
pinkish-beige
