Ptosis
Upper eyelid droops over the eye, should overlap iris but not the pupil. Caused by horner’s syndrome, myasthenia gravis, or oculomotor nerve lesion
Asthenopia
“eye strain”
Collection of symptoms that include
*Eye fatigue
* Weakness
* Pain
* Headache “eyestrain headache” * Dim vision
* Lacrimation
Floaters
Floating debris may drift in and out of the field of vision
Diplopia
Double vision
occurs with the loss of eye muscle balance or function
Photophobia
Aversion to light
Causes:
* Systemic infections actually a myalgia when the ciliary body is forced to contract out of its normal resting iris of dilation
* Migraine
Nyctalopia
Night blindness
* Symptom of underlying disease
* Many causes including * Cataracts
* Medications
Jaundice
- Bilateral sclera have a yellowish tinge
- Overall skin color will also have a yellowish hue
- Caused by conditions such as liver or gall bladder disease which leads to high levels of bilirubin
Exophthalmos
Abnormal protrusion of eye
* Causes include:
* Hyperthyroidism
* Tumors of the orbit
* Arteriovenous fistulas
Stare
Abnormal elevation of upper eyelid
* White sclera shows above the iris
* Hyperthyroidism is classic cause
Ectropian
- Eyelash turns out
- Tarsal plate everts due to laxity * Seen in the elderly
Entropian
*Eyelash turns in
*Tarsal plate inverts due to spasticity
*Seen in the elderly
Blepharitis
Swelling & inflammation along eyelid & eyelash follicles
*Caused by infected or blocked oil glands
*Symptoms: gritty, burning sensation, itching, redness and swollen eyelids
Chalazion
A cyst or fibrotic reaction in a Meibomian gland
* Normally painless * Causes a lump
Hordeolum
“Sty”
* An infection of one of the glands along the eyelashes
* Painful, hot, swollen
