Eye Innervation Flashcards
(17 cards)
What is the sensory innervation of the eye?
The sensory innervation of the eye is provided by the ophthalmic branch (Division I) of CN V (trigeminal nerve).
Which nerves are responsible for motor innervation of the eye?
The motor innervation of the eye is provided by:
- Trochlear nerve (CN IV) for superior oblique muscles
- Abducens (CN VI) for lateral rectus muscle
- Oculomotor (CN III) for all other muscles.
Which nerves pass through the muscular cone?
All motor nerves except the trochlear nerve (CN IV) pass through the muscular cone.
What is the role of the optic nerve?
The optic nerve (CN II) is responsible for vision.
Which nerve closes the eyelid?
The facial nerve (CN VII) innervates the orbicularis oculi to close the eyelid.
Which nerve opens the eyelid?
The oculomotor nerve (CN III) innervates the levator palpebrae to open the eyelid.
What does the superior rectus muscle do?
Moves eyes upward (supraducts the eye)
What is the function of the inferior rectus muscle?
Infraducts or looks down
What does the medial rectus muscle do?
Adducts the eye
What is the function of the lateral rectus muscle?
Abducts the eye
What does the superior oblique muscle do?
Rotates eye toward the nose, intorts it and depresses the eye
What is the function of the inferior oblique muscle?
Rotates eyeball temporally or extorts the eye and elevates it
What is the role of the levator muscle?
Used to raise the upper eyelid
What does the orbicular muscle do?
Causes eyelids to contract
Which nerve is associated with the superior rectus muscle?
Oculomotor nerve (III)
Which nerve affects the superior oblique muscle?
Trochlear nerve (IV)
Which nerve does the lateral rectus muscle?
Abducens nerve (VI)
