What is Fuch’s Dystrophy?
Edema in the cornea
What visual acuity is classified as legal blindness?
20/200 with correction
What 2 things need to be maintained to decrease vision lose?
BP and blood sugar
What is bacterial conjunctivitis called?
Pink Eye
Do Eye drops used to treat conjunctivitis dilate or constrict?
vasoconstrict
Pt teaching for conjunctivitis?
Don’t touch eyes and wash wash wash hands
Cataract risk factors?
Age, Diabetes, smoking, sun exposure, chronic corticosteroid use
When is surgery done for cataracts?
When ADL’s are affected
PT teaching for cataract surgery?
wear sunglasses outside, no lifting, no bending over
What does glaucoma cause?
Increase intraoccular pressure
What is normal IOP?
13-22
What does glaucoma lead to?
Blindness- Leading cause of blindness
What is lost with open angle glaucoma?
Peripheral vision and accommodation
What are S&S for closed angle glaucoma?
decreased/blurred vision, halos around lights, pupils nonreactive to light, photophobia
Nursing knowledge for Mannitol?
Watch urine output, Pt will dehydrate FAST. It is an Osmotic diuretic
Meds to treat glaucoma?
Pilocarpine-miotic, Timolol- beta-blocker, Prednisolone-steroid, Mannitol- Osmotic diuretic
What is lost with Macular degeneration?
central vision is lost, peripheral vision intact
How does the Amsler Grid work.
Pt looks at straight crossing lines and if they are wavy to pt it is positive for Macular degeneration
Why is retina detachment an emergency?
If contact is not reestablished retina dies
Knowledge for foreign objects in eye?
DO NOT try to remove the object
Knowledge for blunt trauma to eye?
Patch the unaffected eye
Post-op teaching for pt of corneal transplant?
Do not bend over, life-long use of medication (steroids and Timolol), Eye exams regularly
Pt teaching for general eye surgery?
Do not bend over, do not lift heavy things, if lots of pain or runny blood-BAD call MD or go to ER
