parsons view on the nuclear family being universal is similar to that of murdock although he differs in suggesting that the nuclear family is more isolated - ‘privatised nuclear family’ one that was self sufficient from other kinship networks and utilised other social kinships to provide some of the functions of the fmaily.

Parsons says roles within the family were best divided based on biological characteristics and the pricess of gender socialisation.
He suggests males are better suited to the instrumental role cos economic support work and discipline.
Women expressive role as they are bilogically and predisposed to show more nurturing characteristics such as empathy.
