Face Flashcards
(29 cards)
What are the branches of the trigeminal nerve?
V1 - Opthalmic
V2 - Maxillary
V3 - Mandibular
What cutaneous nerves of the head and neck are derived from C2/3?
Greater Occipital
Lesser Occipital
Greater Auricular
What are the branches of the facial nerve?
Posterior Auricular Temporal Zygomatic Buccal Mandibular Cervical
What nerve(s) provide motor innervation to the muscles of facial expression?
Facial Nerve (CNVII)
What nerves provide cutaneous innervation to the head and neck?
Trigeminal Nerve
C2/3
Where is the parotid duct located?
From gland it crosses lateral surface of masseter, pierces buccinator m. and feeds into mouth opposite the 2nd upper molar
Where does the facial n exit?
Stylomastoid foramen
What is the parotid plexus?
Branches of facial n within parotid gland
What branch of the facial nerve innervates the buccinators? What muscle does it cross?
Buccal Branch. Crosses superficial to masseter
What is the relationship of the masseter and buccinator?
Buccal fad pad is anterior to the masseter. Buccinator deep to the buccal fat pad.
What branches of the facial artery occur near the angle of the mouth?
Inferior and superior labial arteries
What does V1 innervate?
Ophthalmic division. Skin of forehead, upper eyelids, and nose
What does V2 innervate?
Maxillary division. Skin of lower eyelid, cheek, and upper lip
What does V3 innervate?
Mandibular division. Skin of lower face and part of the side of head
What does C2/3 innervate?
Skin of posterior part of head
Where do the facial nerve branches originate (prior to branching?)
Posterior to the parotid (exit the stylomastoid foramen)
What two nerves are associated with buccinator muscle?
Buccal branch of facial n. - motor Buccal nerve (from V3) - sensory to mucosa of cheek and skin of cheek
What is the position of the facial artery/vein in relation to the submandibular gland?
A. - deep to submandibular
V. - superficial to submandibular
What structures emerge from the mental foramen?
Mental n., a, and v.
What n. is the mental n. a branch of? What type of innervation does it supply? What muscle covers it?
- branch of mandibular (V3) division of trigeminal
- Supplies sensory to lower lip and chin
- Covered by depressor anguli otis m.
Dental anesthesia is inserted through this structure
Infraorbital foramen
What structures emerge from from infraorbital foramen?
Infraorbital n., a., and vein
What condition involves the sudden loss of control of muscles of facial expression? What n. is involved? What symptoms would you expect?
- Bell’s Palsy
- Facial nerve
- Drooping of mouth, inability to close eyelid of affected side
What are the muscles around the oral opening?
Levator labii superioris – elevates upper lip
Zygomaticus major – draws angle of mouth superiorly and posteriorly
Orbicularis oris – sphincter of mouth
Buccinator – compresses cheek against molar teeth
Depressor anguli oris – depresses angle of mouth
