Q

How does population growth affect biodiversity?

A
  • It increases demand for food and housing so deforestation happens to make room for building and agriculture
  • this reduces the number of tree species and reduces the number of animal species as their habitat and food sources are destroyed

Q

How does agriculture affect global warming?

A
  • The rising demand for food means that land needs to be farmed
  • Farmers remove hedgerows in order to make room for machinery and crops
  • Farmers use pesticides to kill pests and insects
  • farmers use herbicides to kill weeds
  • All of this reduces plant and animal species biodiversity

Q

How does climate change affect global warming

A
  • The increase demand for energy means that fossil fuels are being combusted which releases carbon dioxide and other pollutants leading to global warming
  • This can cause sea levels to rise fro melting ice caps and force animals to migrate from their habitat to find more favourable conditions, reducing the number of animal species in the area.
  • Higher temperatures means decreased rainfall. This decreases the number of plant species which are notdrought-resistant. This reduces the number of animals species who rely on these plants as a food source.

Q

Why is it important aesthetically to maintain biodiversity?

A

Maintaining and protecting the landscape as it provides inspiration for musicians and writers who inspire people with their music and books

Q

Why is it important economically to maintain biodiversity?

A
  • Soil erosion as result of deforestation can reduce a country’s ability to grow crops and feed its people, this can lead to economic dependence on other nations
  • Loss of biodiversity can mean that medically and economically important species may go extinct before they are discovered.

Q

Why is it important ecologically to mainitain biodiversity?

A

It protects the keystone species which is a species which has a significant effect on the ecosystem , and other species rely on the activity of this species
