Factors affecting the British Isles weather Flashcards
(6 cards)
The British Isles Climate
Weather is the day to day state of the atmosphere.
Climate is the average weather for a particular time
and place.
Latitude:
at the equator the sun is overhead and
therefore very strong. The further you get from
the equator, the more the sun is at an angle and
therefore less strong and less warm.
Altitude/Relief:
Higher land is colder and usually wetter.
Distance from the sea:
Land warms up and cools down more quickly than
the sea. Places further inland experience hotter
summers and colder winters than coastal areas.
Ocean Currents:
Warm North Atlantic Drift
flows along west coast of UK by warming the
winds over the ocean thus bringing warmer and
wetter weather to south west UK.
Wind direction:
Different winds bring different
weather to Britain depending on where the winds
come from. Cold winds from North make it
cooler, warm winds from south make it warmer;
winds from west make it wetter.
