Q

Why might changes in circumstances stop musicians playing?

A

Sickness (pandemic)

Work (lack of time to devote to an instrument)

New conductor

Move house (might not be able to still be a part of that orchestra/choir)

Nowhere to practice (strict landlords/renting circumstances/neighbours)

Q

Why might physical changes stop musicians playing?

A

Adaptive physical changes such as sore fingers or sore lips can put people off.

Once you’ve stopped playing for a bit, you have to go through the painful process all over again if you pick the instrument back up.

Q

What is a limitation of Pitts & Robinson’s (2016) sample?

A

Difficult to recruit a sample for this type of research. You would probably need to know the participants. Could give rise to issues with bias.

Q

How much the wrong choice of instrument stop musicians playing?

A

Can play piano by yourself but it is difficult to play instruments such as the bassoon by yourself - you would ideally need to play in some sort of ensemble to really enjoy it.
