Fahrenheit 451 Flashcards

1
Q

Guy montag

A

Sees himself as a fireman traitor because he is smart and always feels guilty about it, which leads him to mess with his self sense because he can’t handle the guilt and leads to midlife crisis’s. When clarrise asks if he is happy he feels as though he splits in two. One half is clarrise speaking and the other is his rebellious half. There is also confusion of identity when faber is talking through an ear peace to him and he distances himself from his hands. He doesn’t know why he’s not happy. His life is composed of a constitution-destruction cycle, he sees books burned and cities destroyed and it is with hope the he completes the creation part of the cycle.

Q

Granger

A

Unlike Faber, granger has made peace with his own rebellious inklings and devised a plan to indulge them all (an inkling is a vague idea or notion) without getting killed. He has spent time think about the state of mankind and is the one who reveals the novels lesson about life being cyclic. (Cyclic is recurring in cycles)

Q

Captain Beatty

A

He is a bit of paradox. Uses a lot of bible references about walking on water and stuff like that. Beatty and montag seem very similar but the only difference is that Beatty realizes that books are contradictory and that u must think deeply to uncover what they mean and he is not willing to do that while montag is.

Q

Mildred

A

She’s only here to remind what the average person is like at the time. She believes that she has done her duty by convincing her self that she is happy and proud of her life. But is she really? That’s the real reason she attempted suicide, not that she forgot she had taken the pills.

Q

Clarisse McClellan

A

She’s odd, she doesn’t like TV or vacant socializing which is what draws her to montag. She gets to ask him question that other fireman wouldn’t answer. She is always trying to learn from montag not teach him, and its her constant questioning that pushes him over the edge. She never tells montag what to think, just that thinking is always an option. Even after she disappeared/died she felt like more than Mildred.
