How and when do you clean patient care equipment?
after each use or entry/exit from a patient room, per mfg guidelines using a hospital approved disinfectant (contact times for each disinfectant are documented on the packaging.)
What are the Transmission Based Precautions?
contact, contact-enteric, droplet, airborne
What are the PPE requirements for ‘contact’?
gown, gloves, mask/face shield if respiratory or if splashing is anticipated

How do you store patient supplies to prevent contamination?
off of the floor, separate from dirty items, no corrugated boxes in patient supply rooms
What are unsecured medications?
any meds not secured in the Accudose, Pharmacy or not in the immediate possession of the administering staff member. This includes patient meds that are left after discharge and not sent to Pharmacy, saline flushes that are carried in RIOS, scrub pockets and are not intended for immediate use.
How do you determine the expiration date for glucose controls?
opening date + 3 months - 3 days = expiration date
What is the time frame for reporting critical lab results to the physician?
within 15 min of obtaining the critical result. Nursing must report the result to the physician within 30 min of receipt.
When do you reconcile medications?
on admission, transfer and upon discharge
What is hospital policy for assessment/reassessment of pain?
assessment with each admission, every shift, 1 hr after pain med administrations and with any patient condition change
what is always included in a patient’s Plan of Care?
admission diagnosis, wounds present on admission, blood transfusions, safety issues, infection, any current nursing intervention performed during admission
How is the Plan of Care evaluated by ancillary staff?
review the care plan under nursing documentation and they are able to add their own goals.
