What is simvastatin used for?
Hyperlipidemia — high cholesterol/lipids
Onset of action of Simvastatin?
Onset is about 3 days, peak effect is about 2-4 weeks
Administration advice for Simvastatin
Take in the evening to enhance efficacy
Take with or without food
Side effects of Simvastatin
Muscle cramps (rare but can be serious), stomach pain, constipation, & headache
Benefits of Simvastatin
Lowers cholesterol levels
What is lisinopril used for?
Hypertension, acute MI, And heart failure
Onset of action of lisinopril
1 hour with peak effect in approximately 6-7 hours
Side effects of lisinopril
Dizziness, lightheadedness, & dry/hacking cough
Administration advice of lisinopril
Take with or without food
Benefits of lisinopril
Lowers BP
What is metoprolol used for?
hypertension, Angina pectoris (chest pain), myocardial infarction, heart failure (reduce the risk of a heart related episode)
Onset of action of metoprolol
1-2 hours
Administration advice for metoprolol
Short-acting: take with food
Long-acting: take without regard to food. Swallow whole or split in half. Do not crush or chew
Benefits of metoprolol
Lowers BP
Side effects of metoprolol
Dizziness, bradycardia, tiredness, lightheadedness, nausea/vomiting, diarrhea
What is Bactrim used for?
Used to treat infections including urinary tract infection, bronchitis, otitis media, travelers diarrhea, PCP
Benefits of bactrim
Inhibits bacterial cell growth
Administration advice for Bactrim
Take with or without food (take with food if it causes upset stomach)
Take with a full glass of water
Finish the whole course of the medication
Side effects of Bactrim
Upset stomach, diarrhea, anorexia, rash (allergic reaction), sun sensitivity
Onset of action of Bactrim
Should take a few days before full effects are seen
What is Sertraline used for?
Major depressive disorder, OCD, Panic attacks, PTSD, social anxiety, premenstrual dyspeptic disorder
Benefits of sertraline
Increase levels of serotonin in the CNS
- balance and regulate the hormones in the brain to reduce your “anxiety, depression…”
Onset of action of sertraline
Some effects noticed within 1-2 weeks. It may take 8-12 weeks before the full effects are noticed
Administration advice for sertraline
Side effects may drive when the best time of day to take (if causes drowsiness/sleepiness — take in the evening, if causes excitation, take in the morning)
Take with or without food
Solution must be diluted before use
