Fallacies Vocab Flashcards
(11 cards)
Post Hoc
Mistaking sequence for cause. Just because one event hap-pens before another event doesn’t mean the first event caused the second. There’s no cause and effect. Superstitions.
Hasty Generalization
Claims based on insufficient evidence and data. Small numbers in polls.
False Analogy
Comparing apples to oranges. Just because it works here doesn’t mean it will work in other places. Example: meritocracy
Either or Reasoning
An argument is black or white and ignores the gray area.
Ad Hominem
Attacking the speaker instead addressing the issue.
Appeal to False Authority
These fallacies offer, as support, the fact that a famous person already supports it.
Bandwagon Appeals
How can it be wrong if everyone is doing it or agrees?
Non Sequitur
There’s no evidence to support the claim/major premise. Think syllagisms.
Circular Reasoning
The claim and the reasoning are the same. Begging the question
Red Herring
Creating another problem or distraction instead of addressing the current issue.
