has lead to the development of increasing individuality, choice and freedom. meaning you don’t need to get married and can marry later or if you don’t find satisfaction in your first partner you can seek an alternative.
define cohabitation
unmarried couples in a sexual relationship who are living together.
reasons for the increase in cohabitation?
- decline in stigma attached to sex outside of marriage
- career opportunities for women- meaning they are less likely to marry for financial security

what is the link between cohabitation and marriage?
-coast (2006)- stated that 75% of cohabitating couples say that they are now going to get married
-some see it as a trial marriage
-some see it as a permanent solution to marriage
-bejing (1985) argues that it is an attempt for a more equal relationship than a patriarchal marriage.

-since then it has slightly fallen but still overall increased

-made divorce easier to obtain
-it was hard to get a divorce especially for women in the 19th century
-the grounds for divorce are now equal for men and women (1923)
-divorce has become cheaper
