Family: Poxviridae Flashcards
(15 cards)
Subfamily of poxviridae?
Chordopoxvirus
Name three genera (genus) of chordopoxvirinae?
Genus orthopoxvirus
Genus parapoxvirus
Genus capripoxvirus
Describe the virions of chordopoxvirinae?
Generally enveloped
Brick or oval shaped
Virions are large (200nm in diameter and 300nm in length)
Linear, single (molecule of nucleic acid), double DNA strand
What shape is parapoxvirus?
Ovoid
What shape is capripoxvirus?
Brick-shaped
What shape is orthopoxvirus?
Brick-shaped
What viruses are associated with orthopoxvirus?
Cowpox, horsepox, and monkeypox.
Most famous is variola virus that causes small pox in humans.
Vaccinia virus is the main constituent of the vaccine that was used to eradicate the small pox virus.
Genus parapoxvirus viruses?
- Bovine papular stomatitis virus
- Orf virus
- Pseudocowpox virus
(Milkers nodule virus)
-Squirrel parapoxvirus
Capripoxvirus viruses?
Capripoxvirus
Goatpoxvirus
Lumpy skin disease virus
Sheep pox virus
Is sheep and goat pox easy or hard to distinct from one another?
Yes they are hard to tell apart,
But even though the clinical picture is similar in the two diseases it is generally less severe in goat
How is sheep and goat pox transmitted?
Via close contact to the lesions
Via inhalation of aerosols
Incubation period for goatpox is ___ days
The incubation period of goatpox 5–14 days
Incubation period for sheeppox
The incubation period of sheeppox is 4–8 days
What disease the goatpox and sheeppox must be distinguished from?
The disease in either species must be differentiated from the milder infection, contagious ecthyma (orf, see Contagious Ecthyma), which mainly causes crusty, proliferative lesions around the mouth
Describe the clinical signs of sheeppox and goatpox?
- Fever
- Eyelids become swollen, and mucopurulent discharge crusts the nostrils
- Widespread skin lesions develop and are most readily seen on the muzzle, ears, and areas free of wool or long hair
