Can I change the language on Brainscape.com or in the Brainscape App (for iOS or Android)?
source 1
source 2
At this time, we do not offer the website or apps in other languages. However, you can create flashcards in Brainscape to study any language (or topic) that you choose. Including the ability to support ¡spéciål cháractérs!
We may be able to add more foreign language (Idioma) support in the future. Thank you for your patience as we continue to grow and please stay tuned.
Does Brainscape support superscript and subscript in flashcards?
Yes. On the website, simply switch to the Custom Formatting option (if you are Pro), and you’ll see the editing icons to add superscript and subscript.
Can I merge or split Cards from two or more Decks?
Many users create some initial Cards and Decks, only to belatedly realize that they wish they had organized their Decks differently. Our new editor definitely addresses this issue and provides the flexibility to handle this additional formatting, plus lots more! The card editor can actually perform many bulk actions on cards in decks for classes they have Edit permissions, including how to copy cards from one deck to another.
Here is an example of using our Bulk Actions functionality to copy cards from one deck to another:
Go to the deck that includes the cards you’d like to copy, and make sure you are in the Edit Cards tab
On the left panel, click the radio button next to any of the cards that you are copying
You’ll see a ‘Bulk Actions’ drop down appear
Using the drop down you can choose to copy one or more cards
The cards are then saved to the clipboard and you can select whichever deck (in any class) that you’d like to paste the cards into
Click on the left panel and the ‘Bulk Actions’ drop down menu will appear, and you can choose whatever action you’d like (e.g. Paste)
The Cards should have moved to their correct new Decks and you can arrange or further edit
Can I retrieve Decks that I deleted?
Be careful, because when you delete Brainscape cards you create, they’re gone for good. Think twice before hitting the delete button.
If you’ve accidentally deleted one of your classes or decks entirely, please feel free to contact us, and we’ll see if we’re able to recover them for you. But no promises!
Are there different editing features in the website vs. the mobile app?
The exciting news is that you can now easily edit a flashcard directly from the Study screen in the app, without having to navigate all the way back to the Dashboard and then find that specific deck in order to edit it. Read all about it here.
Additionally, you can add images to flashcards in the iOS app with Brainscape Pro (Android coming soon!). We are making edits on a regular basis and do plan on extending the ability to allow additional editing features on the mobile app in the near future, but if you’d like to use advanced editing features (adding sounds.) you’ll need to visit your class on the website.
Also, make sure you’ve gone out to the App Store, and that you have the latest version of the mobile app. You don’t want to miss the exciting updates!
Do I need WiFi or a 4G/LTE connection?
If you are using the Brainscape app on your phone or tablet, you will need a connection to download the app, sign in, and download any flashcards you’d like to study. The amount of data used depends on how “heavy” your flashcards are. (e.g. If they have a lot of images or audio, they will use up more data.)
You can always decrease Brainscape’s impact on your carrier’s data plan by simply connecting to a WiFi source.
That said, once you have downloaded the flashcards you need, you can totally use Brainscape without a connection (unless you need to create or edit flashcards, which need to be synced with the server for backup). All of your study data will “live” on your device, until you reconnect with a wireless internet data source.

Can I import my Quizlet or Anki decks into Brainscape?
Unfortunately, we cannot allow you to automatically import your Quizlet decks into Brainscape. However, some users have mentioned that they were able to export a Quizlet or Anki deck as a .csv file (from Quizlet’s and Anki’s websites) and then manually import the .csv file via Brainscape’s website.
If you do try something like that with Quizlet or any other study community, please be sure you are complying with their Terms of Service and not importing any copyrighted material into Brainscape.
Does Brainscape drain my phone’s battery?
NO! We have specifically engineered Brainscape to have minimal impact on your phone’s battery and data usage.
Brainscape only downloads the flashcard content to your device upon initial usage, or whenever there has been an edit from another device. When you continue to use Brainscape, all flashcard data is being retrieved from the “local” database on your device, so we don’t need to make any continual data-heavy calls to the server.
We do make occasional tiny data calls to our server to keep your study mastery data in sync between devices, but these are very “data-light”. (A few bytes with “small” numerical data like Card ID and User ID.) So Brainscape should have a very minimal impact on your phone’s data plan or your phone’s battery consumption. (See also: Do I need a WiFi or 4G/LTE connection?)
We also do not use or share your Location data, which is often a big reason why other apps may be draining your battery.
How are Brainscape’s iPhone and Android apps different?
If you have tried Brainscape on both an iOS device and an Android device, you may have noticed that the apps are quite different from each other. This is simply a temporary phenomenon, due to our software development team’s order of operations.
Differences
Brainscape has had an iPhone app on the App Store for several years. Over time, we have added dozens of features, removed bugs, and refined the user experience to what it is today.
Our Android app, on the other hand, was developed only relatively recently. It has only a sub-set of features and it is not quite as “refined” as our iOS app.
The Future
That said, you will soon be seeing a lot more innovation on the Android app. We have been developing it using a new software framework called “React Native”, which will eventually allow us to manage both the iOS and Android apps from a single software code base. Our team is very excited about this new technology and about the great user experience that we’ll be able to create with it.
Read more about exciting app changes you can expect to start seeing on iOS and then soon in Android.
Also, make sure you’ve gone out to the App Store, and make sure you have the latest version of the mobile app. You don’t want to miss the exciting updates!
How can I contact Brainscape?
If you have not found the help you need here, via our Help Center, then there are a few ways you could contact us:
Web Help button – Click the “Help” bubble in the bottom-right of any screen, and perform any search. At the bottom of the search results should be an option to Contact us.
Web Contact form – Simply visit the Contact form, and you can submit any request
Mobile app – In your Brainscape app’s menu, select the option for Help, and then choose the option to Contact Us
We pride ourselves in our prompt responses, so you should hopefully hear back from us in less than 24 hours! We look forward to potentially speaking with you.
How can I get my class to show up in Brainscape search?
You’ve created a great class? Well done 👏 Now you want to the rest of the world to be able to find it, right? Brainscape’s search results are ever-evolving to show you the best classes that we have to offer! Our class search algorithm is a combination of a Quality Score + Stickiness Score, using a series of very complex logarithmic and weighting functions that our team has developed over the years.
The Quality Score – is driven by both the raw amount of content, and how well it is organized. e.g. A class with 10 decks of 100 cards each would rank much more highly than a class with one deck of 1,000 cards.
The Stickiness Score – is driven by not just the raw number of people who study it, but more by the average number of cards studied per person who studies it. A class with 10 learners who all study 100% of the 1,000 cards will likely rank higher than a class with 50 learners who all study 2 cards and quit. So there is an incentive for you to make your content good — particularly the first several cards in each deck, to “hook” other learners.
Deck name match is not the goal – Just because your class has a deck in it that matches the search result that doesn’t mean it’ll show up in our search results. Deck name matching is a low priority in the results ranking.
Synonyms in searches – Your class can have a synonym or similar name to another search and still show up. As an example, a search for “APUSH” will yield some results for “AP US History”, or a search for “cardiovascular system” will include results just called “Cardio”.
More than ever, you will really need to make sure you name your class using keywords that you think other learners would be searching for.
FYI, if you’re really proud of your content and think it actually could be Brainscape-certified so you can earn royalties, check out our Verified Author program.
Lastly, if you don’t want your content to show up in search results, be sure to make it private.
How can I organize my Class into “folders”?
Brainscape classes can include multiple decks. Decks are ordered by creation date by default. We don’t currently have a way to group Decks into sub-groups within a Class.
That said, we do soon hope to add new ways to re-order Decks within a Class, so stay tuned!
How can I print my flashcards?
We may be able to add a simple print option in the future, for now, we can offer a couple of workarounds:
- You can export the class or deck and print from your spreadsheet software
- You can choose to “preview” the cards (by clicking on the glasses icon next to your deck title) and then print this screen, OR copy/paste this screens’ view into your word doc software
(Note that at the moment you can only do it for classes where you have Edit or Admin permissions, so you may need to make a copy of a class if you’re studying another user’s class.)
How can I put HTML into flashcards? (edited while on Study mode)
While we do not recommend this (because much can and will go wrong!), you can add or edit the raw HTML in a card by using the Source option found when using Custom Formatting.
We’ve designed Brainscape to do a lot of auto formatting so your cards will look great on different devices and screen sizes, so you will be taking all that into your own hands when you start modifying the actual HTML on your cards.
You can experiment with using “quotation marks” and other tricks to try to “escape” your HTML tags, but it can be finicky.
How do I add Cards to a Deck?
For any class that you either have Edit permissions for, or any class you have created, you can add Decks and Flashcards.
On the web, after naming a Deck, you can click on the ‘Add Cards’ button to be taken to the card editor, where you can quickly and easily create the actual Questions & Answers that pertain to the content you (or your students) will be studying.
The Add Cards button is available when creating a New Deck, otherwise click the ‘pencil’ icon next to the Deck you’d like to add cards.
To add flashcards to existing decks, you can click on the pencil icon next to the deck you’d like to edit and you will be taken to the card Editor. You can click the + icon to be taken to the bottom of the card list and you can create a new flashcard for that deck by clicking ‘Create New Card’ at the bottom of the card column on the left side of the Edit Cards tab.
The left column of the Edit Cards Tab includes the list of flashcards. You can add more cards by clicking the ‘+’ icon at the top of the column, or by scrolling down and clicking ‘Create New Card’.
In the iOS app, for any classes where you are the owner, you can click the ‘+’ icon once you are in a deck add a new card to an existing deck. For further editing, you will need to use the web version of the tool for now, especially if that deck was created with the Advanced Editor / Custom Formatting. For any new decks you create, you can easily add flashcards and edit them as well. Stay tuned for further editing features on the both the iOS and Android apps in the coming months!
How do I add equations to flashcards?
A lot of math text is already supported as regular text. For example:
x2 + 6y/7 = √y
But if you need more complex equation functionality, the simplest way to add equations to your flashcards is to create them using some more advanced equation editing software, take image screenshots, and upload these using the flashcard editor on the website or on the iOS mobile app.
In the future, we hope to build in equation editing functionality into our own platform.
How do I cancel my Pro subscription and any future billings?
If you no longer need the services of Brainscape Pro, you can easily cancel your subscription so your credit card does not get billed again going forward. You will continue to enjoy the features of Brainscape Pro until the current paid billing period expires.
On the Web
If you originally purchased your subscription using the Brainscape website, then you can simply go to Manage Account (found by clicking the gear icon next to your avatar on the class dashboard)–> Subscriptions to see or modify your current plan. There is a “click to cancel” button if you would like to opt-out of Brainscape Pro going forward.
In the iOS or Android App
If you originally purchased your subscription inside the Brainscape mobile app, you should ideally cancel your subscription in the same place. Simply open the app, make sure you’re logged into your account, and go to your Account Settings, where there is an option for “Brainscape Pro Subscription”. On that page you can choose “Modify Subscription”, and it will take you to the appropriate page in your Apple or Google settings where you can cancel your Brainscape plan.
In an iPhone/iPad, you can also just go to your main Settings app, choose iTunes & App Stores, tap your Apple ID, and then choose Subscriptions on the subsequent screen.
Regardless of your cancelation method, we’re sad to see you go, and we hope you can make use of Brainscape Pro again in the future!
Note: Your subscription will automatically renew unless canceled at least 24-hours before the end of the current period.
How do I delete a class?
There are two easy ways to remove a class you no longer wish to study in Brainscape:
Move your cursor over to the class you want to delete in the list of your classes in the left panel. While hovering over it, an "X" will appear to the right of the class name. Click the "X" and then select "Yes, remove class" on the Caution / confirmation message. If the class is already selected, you may also click on the bread crumb ( . . . ) under the main class title in the center panel. Pick "Remove from Your Classes" among the options available.
How do I delete my account?
It happens. Sometimes a user has created multiple accounts in Brainscape and they want to delete the extra ones that they don’t use. You may now do this in the iOS app, and we hope to bring this to Android and the website in the future.
To delete your account in the app, simply click the options button (…) and select ‘Account’ from the menu. Once you are on the Account screen you have the option to ‘Delete Account’.
If you have an active Brainscape Pro subscription, you may receive an error. You’ll need to cancel your subscription where you originally made the purchase (i.e. iOS, Android or website) before you can proceed to delete your account.
Please note that if you have a existing subscription with time left the deletion of your account won’t officially happen until the subscription has come to an end. e.g. If you have a month subscription, but still have 10 days left, you’ll need to wait to the end of the period that you’ve paid for to end before the account will be officially deleted.
If you do not have access to the iOS app please contact us and we’ll be happy to delete your account for you.
Note: If there are other people using flashcards that you created, it may be safer to just change your name & email address, rather than deleting your account, so that those associated flashcards don’t also get deleted. (This will protect your identity, if that was a concern, without actually harming people who were studying your flashcard content.) **If you do have decks associated with your account, you will have the opportunity to delete them before you delete your account, otherwise if you do not do this any user studying the class will still have access by default. Once you delete your account you will no longer have access to those flashcards.
If you simply want to deactivate your account but come back to use it at a later date, then you can always just leave it alone for now, and ensure that you have stopped any paid subscriptions.
How do I fix issues syncing my app with the website?
Your flashcards in the Brainscape mobile app(s) should sync automatically each time you log in fresh after not using for several hours. Your study progress should also sync every few minutes.
But sometimes sync troubles happen. You might want to try tapping the Sync icon in the top corner of the main My Classes screen in your Brainscape app.
If that still doesn’t work, then please try one or more of the following:
Touch the settings menu, and choose Sync Account
Perform a “hard” close of the app (Double tap the home button and swipe up to fully close)
Log out and log back into your account
Uninstall and reinstall the app
Turn your device off and back on
Also, make sure you’ve gone out to the App Store and have updated your version of the mobile app. You don’t want to miss the exciting updates!
How do I get back to the Simple Editor after switching to Custom Formatting?
If you have either decided to stop using the Custom Formatting tool in our Editor, or you have recently gone from being a Pro user to studying for free, there is a way to revert back.
For any decks where the Custom Formatting (HTML) editing was being used, just go to the left panel and click the Organize drop down. Then select the Restore Auto Formatting menu item to be taken back to a more simple editor mode.
How do I kick users out of my Class?
You can view users in your Class by:
Navigating to your Class, on the My Classes screen of the website;
Clicking the Learners tab; and
Removing any single unwanted users by clicking the three dots to the right of each user and choose “Remove from Call” (first screenshot below)
Bulk remove multiple users at once: Choose the open circle on the left hand side at the top of the learners list. (second screenshot below)
—-NOTE— if you do not deselect yourself you may also be removed from the class.

How do I rearrange Decks in a Class?
Decks in a Class are ordered by creation date, by default. You can now manually reorder your decks right on your Library screen via Brainscape.com. Just click the “Reorder Decks” option and use the orange squares to the left of the deck titles to sort. Hit Done Sorting and voila!
How do I remove copyrighted material from Brainscape?
Please contact us with a link pointing at the copyrighted material, and we will remove any infringing content upon request.
