Q

7 ADVANTAGES OF DEVELOPMENTS IN FARMING (DEVELOPED) - EAST ANGLIA

A
  1. Poly tunnels with environmental control systems can be used to improve yield and grow crops out of season.
  2. Larger machines such as tractors are now used. These are more efficient and allow farmers to do less physical work.
  3. Drones can be used to survey crops and quickly identify problems such as water shortages
  4. As more rural activities begin such as BnBs opening so people can experience the countryside, tourists are attracted which means farmers are less dependant on only making money from crops.
  5. As more money goes towards rural areas, it can be invested into the economy to improve healthcare and education.
  6. GM crops promise a higher and improved yield and then higher income for the farmer
  7. GM crops can develop resistance to disease meaning a more reliable harvest.

Q

7 DISADVANTAGES OF DEVELOPMENTS IN FARMING (DEVELOPED) - EAST ANGLIA

A
  1. As farms are enlarged to ensure the new machinery will fit, hedgerows have to be removed, spoiling the natural beauty of the countryside.
  2. Most machinery runs on petrol which is a fossil fuel, this increases air pollution and noise pollution and leads to climate change.
  3. Machinery can be costly to buy and repair and can put farmers into debt as it is expensive.
  4. As tourists begin to visit, foot paths are eroded and crops are trampled leading to money needing to be spent to fix them.
  5. Tourists drop litter which animals can swallow and increase vet bills meaning a loss of income. The litter also leads to spoiling the scenery.
  6. Many people don’t approve of GM crops as they haven’t been proven to be safe yet.
  7. People have concern that they could have a negative impact on people’s health.

7 ADVANTAGES OF DEVELOPMENTS IN FARMING (DEVELOPING) - GANGES VALLEY IN INDIA

A

1.Small farms have been joined together to make larger but fewer farms to ensure farmers can manage their land better.
2. Mini tractors and small rice harvesters are used to plough fields and harvest crops.
3. Trailers and trucks have replaced bullock carts in transporting crops as they are more effective.
4. Stone lines are built on fields to trap soil and water to ensure farming can be done all year round and food production is improved.
5. The use of pesticides and fertilisers improve yields and encourage trade with other countries which means more money to invest into the economy - healthcare, education.
6. Some GM seeds can produce 10x more crops than the regular seeds used on the land. This resulted in famine almost being gone in India.
7. The use of bio fuels in machinery such as bio diesel vechiles lessens the effect of climate change.

Q

7 DISADVANTAGES OF NEW DEVELOPMENTS IN FARMING (DEVLOPING) - GANGES VALLEY IN INDIA

A
  1. As many farmers are replaced by new technology and lose their jobs, they are forced into cities to find work and this can result in shanty towns.
  2. Tractors can run on fossil fuels which lets CO2 into the atmosphere and contributes to global warming.
  3. Some farmers can’t afford machinery and are then in competition with other farmers.
  4. Irrigation can lead to soil becoming exhausted as it is in constant use.
  5. GM crops require a better source of water and irrigation which increases farmers cost.
  6. People claim that GM crops don’t always taste good and can have a negative effect on people’s health.
  7. Industries are reluctant to use bio fuels whilst fossil fuels are still available.
