Fatty Acids Lectue Flashcards
(18 cards)
What are lipids?
Biomolecules that are insoluble in water but soluble in organic solvents
Hydrolysis of lipids yields what products?
Glycerol and three fatty acids
What are fatty acids?
Carboxylic acids with long carbon chains, usually 12-20 carbon atoms
Where is fat stored?
In adipose cells (adipocytes)
What is contained in adipose cells?
Large lipid droplet and flattened nucleus at edge of cell
What is the basic function of eicosanoids?
Signalling
What are compound lipids?
Lipids containing additional elements
How are triglycerides made?
Three fatty acid chains esterify to glycerol to make fat
What are the two types of triglyceride?
Homogenous or heterogenous
Name three homogenous triglycerides?
Tristearin, tripalmitin, triolein
Explain numerical formulae of fatty acids
Underlined = no. of carbon atoms Bold = no. of double bonds in aliphatic chain Parentheses = location of double bonds
Numerical formula of palmitic acid?
16:0
Numerical formula of linoleic acid?
18:2(9,12)
Numerical formula of linolenic acid?
18:3(9,12,15)
Numerical formula of arachidonic acid
20:4(5,8,11,14)
Name a phospholipid derived from phosphatidic acid
Phostphatidate
How is lecithin formed?
Choline is esterified to phosphate group of phosphatidate
How are cephalins formed?
Beta-ethanolamine or serine esterified to phosphate group of phosphatidate
