Auriculars
Feathers just below and behind the eye that cover the ear
Belly
Patch along midline above legs. It could be bare brood patch. May be covered in feathers
Chest
Also breast. Broad area on front between wings.
Crown
Area on very top of head along midline. Can be crest.
Flank
Broad area on side of bird between wing and leg
Forehead
The patch just above the upper beak along the midline
Lore
Small patch between eye and upper beak
Eye stripes run across Lorne’s and continue behind eye
Malar region
Patch running from the beak back to area between throat and eye.
Mantle
Area between wings on bird’s back
Nape
Area on the back of a bird’s head and neck
Primaries
Stiff feathers on the outer portion ( hand) of the wing that generate forward thrust during flight
Rump
An area on the back of a bird below the mantle and above the tail; can be brightly colored as in the yellow-rumped warbler.
Secondaries
Stiff feathers on the inner middle portion (forearm) wing that generate lift during flight.
Side
An area adjacent to the wing toward the belly.
Supercilium
A stripe of feathers running for the upper beak and up over the eye, much like am eyebrow.
Tail
A set of stiff feathers at the rear of the bird arranged in symmetrical pairs on either side of the midline; most birds have six pairs; only the central pair attach to bone with ligaments; help birds steer in flight; tail feathers are also called rectrices
Throat
An area just below the beak on the front of the bird, often brightly colored in male hummingbirds
Under tail coverts
Feathers between the legs and under the tail that smooth the airflow over the base of the tail feathers
Underwing coverts
Feathers on the underside of the wing that smooth the airflow over the base of the wing feathers
Uppertail coverts
Feathers just above the tail that south the airflow over the base of the tail feathers; can be elaborate as in the mail peacock.
Malar region
Patch running from the beak back to area between throat and eye.
Mantle
Area between wings on bird’s back
Nape
Area on the back of a bird’s head and neck
Primaries
