“project”/attribute your own unacceptable impulses onto others

you are attracted to your roommate’s partner, but you know that is unacceptable. Instead you tell your roommate that their partner is attracted to YOU! (“He’s always staring at me, I think he’s flirting with me!”)

You do poorly on an exam that you did not prepare for, but instead you blame the professor for being boring and say that the exam was unfair

converting an unacceptable feeling into its opposite

your boss yells at you, and you can’t respond for fear of the consequences, so you come home and yell at your roommate

1. Since birth, Id has sex drive looking for outlet 2. each stage: erogenous zone 3. each stage: has task to complete before moving to the next stage 4. a person can get stuck in a stage (known as fixation)

-boy discovers penis and is proud -desires mom , obstacle dad (so he is resentful) -resolution = identifies like dad, wants to marry girl like mom
