What is a federal system?

A

Under the federal system power is constitutionally divided between the national government and the provinces.The federal system refers to a system of legal and administrative relationships between units (intergovernmental relations) which real authority and jurisdiction autonomy. Federalism allows for both the expression of regional goals and a coordinated expression of national goals

Advantages

A

The provinicial government are in a better position to understand local problems and offer unique solutions for them
Federalism offer representation to different populations
State government have the freedom to adopt policies which may not be followed nationally or by any other state.
Division of work between the central and the regional government leads to optimum utilization of resources

Disadvantages

A

Overlapping of work and subsequent confusion regarding who is responsible for what.
The federal system of government is very expensive as more people are elected to office, both at the state and the center, than necessary.
Unnecessary competition between different regions.
Regional inequalities.
