Q

Fermentation

A
  • Anaerobic catabolism of organic nutrients
  • Production of ATP in the absence of O2
  • ATP is produced by glycolysis (2 molecules/glucose)

Q

Differences between fermentation & respiration

A
  • Fermentation NAD+ is produced from NADH without the production of ATP
  • Final electron acceptor in fermentation: pyruvate or acetaldehyde / respiration: oxygen
  • Cellular respiration yields 16 times more ATP/glucose than fermentation
