Fermentation Flashcards
0
Q
Two types of fermentation
A
- Alcohol fermentation
- Lactic acid fermentation
1
Q
Fermentation
A
- Anaerobic catabolism of organic nutrients
- Production of ATP in the absence of O2
- ATP is produced by glycolysis (2 molecules/glucose)
2
Q
Alcohol fermentation
A
glucose➡️(ADP to ATP & NAD+ to NADH)➡️pyruvate➡️(release of CO2)➡️acetaldehyde➡️(NADH to NAD-)➡️ethanol
3
Q
Lactic acid fermentation
A
In human muscles during exercise & some bacteria, glycolisis
4
Q
In common between fermentation & respiration
A
Use glycolysis: oxidize glucose to pyruvate, producing two moles of ATP
5
Q
Differences between fermentation & respiration
A
- Fermentation NAD+ is produced from NADH without the production of ATP
- Final electron acceptor in fermentation: pyruvate or acetaldehyde / respiration: oxygen
- Cellular respiration yields 16 times more ATP/glucose than fermentation
