What disease are ferrets prone to and why?

A

Adrenal disease b/c they are spayed/neutered at a very young age
- early spay/neuter inhibits sex hormone production (by the testicles, uterus -> over-functioning of the adrenal glands to produce these missing sex hormones

sex hormones: estrogens, androgens, progestagens

A

Fleas, ear mites, warbles (cuterebra larva)

Sarcoptic mites = rare in U.S.

Demodectic mites = immunosuppressed ferrets

  5. SC facial abscesses (dental disease)
  6. ulcerative pododermatitis (poor husbandry)

pododermatitis = inflammation of foot/paw
