fertilization & pregnancy Flashcards
(22 cards)
Sexual Intercourse
Penis is inserted into the vagina until ejaculation occurs
Sperm
Male sex cell
Ova (egg)
Female sex cell
Ejaculation
The release of semen from the male reproductive organs
How long can sperm live in the female Fallopian tube?
usually 3-5, but sometimes up to 7 days
How long can sperm live/ survive outside of the body?
Only a few hours
What must happen in order for prego. to occur?
The sperm and ova must meet after/ during intercourse
How does the sperm travel to get to the ova (egg)?
The sperm travels up to the vagina, through the cervix, past the uterus, and into the Fallopian tube where fertilization occurs
Fertilization
The joining of egg and sperm cell
Up to how many sperm are released in 1 ejaculation, and how many can fuse with the ova?
As many as 40 million-1.2 billion sperm are released in 1 ejaculation, but only ONE can fuse with the ova
Implantation
Attaching the zygote to the uterine wall
Zygote
The fertilized egg
Embryo
From the 2 cell stage through the 8th week of development
Twins
Multiple birth (development of more than 1 baby from a single prego.)
Identical (monozygotic) twins
Single egg released from ovary and fertilized by 1 sperm
-fertilized egg then splits into 2 embryos
Fraternal (dizygotic) twins
2 eggs released from ovary and fertilized by 2 different sperm
Amniotic Sac
Fluid filled sac that surrounds and protects the embryo
Placenta
Membrane that forms on the wall of the uterus that links the mother and the developing fetus
Can twins each have/make their own amniotic sac and placenta?
Yes, but they can also share one
When do conjoined twins happen?
When a zygote fails to split completely during development in the womb
Fetus
From the 9th week until birth (weeks 10-40ish)
Umbilical Cord
Rope like structure attached to the placenta that forms between the mother and fetus; contains blood vessels that exchange nutrients and waste
