What is a fertilised egg that has divided into a ball called?
An Embryo
What is a fetus (foetus)?
An unborn baby (usually eight weeks after conception)
What does the amniotic fluid do?
It’s the liquid that protects the fetus in the uterus
What is the placenta?
The organ in the uterus that allows the transfer of nutrients and waste products between the mother and the fetus through the umbilical chord
Gestation
The time during which a fertilised egg develops into a baby ready to be born
What does the Embryo do?
The Embryo attaches to the lining of the Uterus. It begins to develop a fetus.
Name 3 things a fetus needs
Protection, oxygen and nutrients (food and water)
What is amniotic fluid?
A liquid in a bag (the amnion) that protects the fetus
What is the placenta?
An organ responsible for providing the fetus with nutrients and removing waste substances.
How long does it usually take for a baby to develop?
40 weeks
What is the time called when a baby is being developed?
Gestation
What happens to the womans body when she is ready to give birth?
The cervix relaxes and muscles in the wall of the uterus contract. Waves of muscle contraction push the baby out.
What happens when a baby is born too early?
They are put into a warm incubator
