What is the role of the epiglottis?
The epiglottis is a small flap above the larynx that folds down to prevent food from entering the windpipe/trachea.
What are the functions of the liver?
The liver is the largest organ, produces bile that breaks down fat, helps regulate blood sugar by storing glycogen, and processes waste and blood from intestines.
Where is the gallbladder located and what is its function?
The gallbladder is embedded under the liver and stores excess bile.
What is the structure and function of the stomach?
The stomach is balloon-like, expands when food enters, and begins chemical digestion using HCl for further digestion.
What is the spleen’s importance?
The spleen is a bumpy extension next to the stomach and is important in immune function.
What is the role of the small intestine?
The small intestine has a noodle structure, neutralizes chyme from the stomach, digests food, and absorbs nutrients for circulation throughout the body.
What is the main site of digestion in the small intestine?
The duodenum is the main site of digestion as chyme mixes with gastric juice.
What is the main site of absorption in the small intestine?
The jejunum is the main site of absorption.
What happens in the ileum?
The ileum is the site of digestion as food leads to the large intestine.
What is the function of the large intestines?
The large intestines are mostly behind the small intestine, reabsorb water, and process waste.
What does the pancreas do?
The pancreas has a grainy texture, is within the mesentery, and releases enzymes that break down fat and starch.
What is the structure and function of the rectum?
The rectum is the end of the large intestine, has two sphincters that connect to the anus, and stores feces.
What is the mesentery?
