Feynman Diagrams Flashcards
(7 cards)
What can Feynman diagrams be used for?
Calculating the probability of a process occurring in particle physics
What are external lines?
The particles in the initial and final states
What are vertices?
The points at which particle interact
Conservation laws apply at every vertex
What are internal lines?
Represent the transfer of quantum numbers and energy
Steps for drawing a Feynman diagram?
Consider the force involved
Consider any spectator particles/quarks
Consider what has changed
What is the hierarchy of forces?
Strong-Strong and Fast
EM-Middle strength and medium speed
Weak-Weak and slow
What are virtual particles?
A particle which can have any mass needed to conserved energy/momentum
These are never observed
