  • When America was founded, it tried to distance itself from the class system, but the novel shows that the class structure still exists. Gatsby can’t escape his past.

  • The ‘American Dream’ is a con concept that people like Gatsby fall for due to its false sense of security.
  • Nick shows us that Gatsby had failed to realise that his dreams had already ended and that his dream, of status through Daisy, was unattainable as it was rooted in the past.
