Fibroid Flashcards
(14 cards)
What is the most common benign tumor of the uterus and female body?
Uterine fibroid (leiomyoma, myoma, or fibromyoma).
What is the histological composition of a uterine fibroid?
Smooth muscle and fibrous connective tissue.
What percentage of women around age 30 have uterine fibroids?
Approximately 20%.
How many fibroid cases remain asymptomatic?
Approximately 50%
What is the incidence of symptomatic fibroids in hospital outpatients?
Around 3%
Which population has a higher prevalence of fibroids?
Black women and women in England (up to 10%).
In which group of women are fibroids more common?
Nulliparous women or women with one-child infertility.
What is the peak age range for fibroid prevalence?
35-45years
What is the proposed origin of fibroids?
Neoplastic transformation of a single smooth muscle cell of the myometrium.
What chromosomal abnormalities are associated with fibroids?
Abnormalities involving chromosomes 6 or 7 (rearrangements, deletions).
Name three polypeptide growth factors implicated in fibroid growth.
EGF (Epidermal Growth Factor), IGF-1 (Insulin-like Growth Factor-1), TGF (Transforming Growth Factor).
What evidence supports estrogen dependency in fibroids?
• Rare before menarche
• Growth during pregnancy
• Regression after menopause
• Increased estrogen receptors
• Associated with anovulation
When do fibroids grow rapidly?
During pregnancy, with high-dose contraceptives, or due to degeneration/malignancy.
How long does it typically take for a fibroid to become palpable?
3~5years
