Figurative language
Language that employs figures of speech, which are not meant to be taken literally, to suggest additional meaning
Motif
Reoccurring image or repeated idea that connects to theme
Dramatic irony
Occurs when there is a discrepancy between what a character believes or says and what the reader/audience knows to be true
Verbal irony
Occurs when a person says one thing but means the opposite
Situational irony
A surprising, interesting, or amusing, contrast between what is expected, and what actually happens
Diction
Writers choice of words, phrases, sentence structures, and figurative language, which combined to create meaning
Characterization
Technique a writer uses to develop the readers understanding of characters
A) direct physical description, comments, details provided by narrator
B) characters speech, thoughts and actions
C) speech, thoughts, actions of other characters
Third person omniscient Point of view
Story teller can tell thoughts, feelings, and perspective of all characters
Third person limited point of view
Story tellers knowledge is limited to a complete knowledge of one character in the story, and tells readers only what the character thinks, feels, sees or hears
Third person objective point of view
Story teller only reports what character say and do, the author does not interpret their behavior or tell readers their private thoughts or feelings
Exposition
Introduces the characters, setting and conflict
Static character
Neither the character nor the readers knowledge of; the character changes throughout the work
Graphic weight
Describes way some images are drawn with I more than others
Foreground, and midground, background
Foreground-panel closest to you
Midground-allowing centering image, natural resting place
Background-additional info for readers, could have colors, brighter or duller or pattern
Bleed
Image that extends beyond edge of page/panel
Gutter
Space between panels
Frame
Lines and borders that contain panels
Panel
Distinct segment of the comic, containing text and image
Feature story
Takes an item from news and goes more in-depth. More personal and may have opinion attached to it
Sketch
Description that focuses briefly on a particular person, place, experience or event
