FIGHTING DISEASE Flashcards
How can bacteria make you ill?
damaging your cells and producing toxins
What are pathogens?
pathogens are microorganisms that enter the body and cause disease
How do vaccinations work?
vaccinations involve injecting small amounts of dead or inactive microorganisms. These carry antigens which cause your body to produce antibodies to attack them, even though the microorganism is harmless. Then if the microbes try to attack again, they are recognised quickly an attacked.
advantage of vaccinations
help control infectious diseases
prevent epidemics or big outbreaks of disease
disadvantage of vaccinations
they don’t always work
you can sometimes have a bad reaction
What do painkillers do?
they relieve the pain but don’t actually tackle the cause of the disease , they just help to reduce symptoms
What do antibiotics do?
they actually kill the bacteria causing the problem without killing your own body cells
How can bacteria become resistant to antibiotics?
Bacteria can mutate and sometimes mutations cause them to be resistant to an antibiotic.
