Simile
It is a comparing using like or as
Ex: They are as quiet as a mouse
Metaphor
It is an implied comparison
Ex: Students are night owls
Alliteration
Repeating consonants in 2 or more neighbouring words
Ex: Larry Let Loose, kendra’s kitten kept kicking
Hyperbole
An outrageous exaggeration
Ex: She is so smart her brain is the size of the sun, your locker is so messy it looks like a dumpster
Personification
Representing an object with human qualities
Ex: My lunch is calling me
Imagery
Visually descriptive language
Ex: With a spider’s web hanging across the door the hinges are rust and creak in the wind
Symbolism
When something represents something else
Ex: oh my luve is like a rose that’s newly sprung in june
Rhyme
the repetition of words that sound the same, typically at the end of the line
Ex: twinkle twinkle little star..
Rhythm
The way in which a poem is written so that it flows
Ex: because I could not stop for death he kindly stopped for me..
Stanza
Two or more lines of a poem that form a division
Ex: today is your birthday…
Onomatopoeia
The use of a sound
Ex: the bee buzzed in ear
Idiom
phrases that have a meaning that is very different from its individual parts
Ex: Break a leg
Oxymoron
A combination of contradictory words
Ex: jumbo shrimp, calm storm
