File 2 Flashcards
Vocab (20 cards)
Palatography
experimental method that shows the contact between the tongue and the roof of the mouth
Sound Spectrograph
equipment that generates spectrograms from speech imput
Monophthongs
a simple vowel, composed of a single configuration of the vocal organs
Diphythongs
A complex vowel, composed of a sequence of two different configurations of the vocal organs
Intonation
patterns of speech movements across a stretch of speech such as a sentence
The speech production mechanism
- larynx (voice box)
- supralaryngeal vocal tract
- nasal cavity
- oral cavity
- pharynx (throat) - subglottal system (respiratory system)
- trachea (windpipe)
Labiodental
sound produced by making contact between the lower lip and the upper teeth
Interdentals
sound produced by positioning the tip of the tongue between the upper and lower teeth
Alveolar
sound produced by raising the front of the tongue toward the front of the upper alveolar ridge
Alveolar ridge
bony ridge of the upper lower jaw that contains the sockets for teeth.
Retroflex
sound produced by curling the tip of the tongue back behind the alveolar ridge, usually to the top of the mounth
Bilabial
sound produced by bringing both lips together
Rounding
a property of the production of vowels having to do with whether the lips are rounded or not
Palatal
sound made by raising the body of the tongue toward the hard part of the roof of the mouth
Trill
a sound produced by bringing two articulators together in a series of quick taps
Approximants
consonant sound produced by constriction of the vocal tract that is not narrow enough to block the vocal tract or cause turbulance
Airstream mechanism
ways to produced a stream of moving air through the vocal track for the production of speech sounds
Formats
resonant frequency that amplifies some groups of harmonics above others, appears as a dark band on spectrogram
Spectrogram
a three-dimensional representation of sound in which the vertical axis represents frequency, the horizontal axis represents time, and the darkness of shading represents amplitude
Aspiration
a puff of air that follows the release of a consonant when there is a delay in the onset voicing
