File Types Flashcards
Examples of raster graphics
- tiff
- jpg
- png
- bmp
What makes up raster graphics
digital images made up of tiny coloured squares called pixels. These pixels are arranged in a grid-like pattern to create a detailed image
The quality of a raster graphic is directly proportional to the…
Number of pixels it contains or PPI (pixels per inch)
Advantage of Raster graphics
High resolution images allow for
photorealistic images to be saved
as each pixel can be a different
colour, allowing for subtle changes
in colour
* Allows for rich and detailed
images due to use of pixels over
shapes
* Common file format that can be
opened in any software
* Does not require specialist
software to open so can be used
almost anywhere and on any
device
Disadvantage of Raster graphics
- Images can become pixelated
- Can be less suited for high quality print material, especially large print projects
File type for Cad models
STEP
DXF
3DS
IGES
Benefit of STEP files
common file type, can be opened on most common cad software
Examples of vector graphics
svg
dxf
What is a vector file
Vector graphics are digital images made up of mathematically defined shapes, lines, and curves. These shapes are created using algorithms, rather than pixels
advantages of Vector files
Smaller file sizes than raster graphics
Scalable without pixelation
Can be resized without a lack of sharpness
Clear and precise graphics can be produced.
Have no background
disadvantages of vector files
- The software that edits these types of graphics can be expensive.
- Only this specialised software packages can be used to edit these type of graphics.
Unsuitable for photorealistic images.
2D vector graphic CAD file is best for conveying line work and text
DXF
3D CAD file type is best for holding essential information such as geometry, texture and lighting data
3DS
File type used for logos and other key company symbols
SVG
Explain why dxf is a suitable format for CAD drawings
Many applications can open a DXF
file as it a commonly used file
format.
* The type of information being
conveyed is 2D line work and
text, and is the type of
information that a DXF is
designed to handle
* DXF is a vector graphic and so can
be scaled without losing quality
Define a high resolution
An image that contains a large number of pixels per unit area
