What are the three main layers of the skin?

What is the epidermis mostly made of?
Dead skin cells
Name the 5 layers of the epidermis from top to bottom
Corneum Lucidum Granulosum Spinosum Germivatum
What is another name for the corneum, and what is the protein that is found in it?
The horny layer. Keratin is found in the corneum and that is why it is so tough.
What is special about the lucidum?
No hair grows on the lucidum. It is only found on soles of feet and palms of the hands.
What layer of the epidermis is melanin produced?
Spinosum
What layer are are new cells made?
Germivatum
What is an alternate name for the dermis?
True skin
What is the dermis layer made of and what are the two proteins that make it?
It is made of connective tissue. Collagen and elastin
What is a sudiferous gland and where is it found?
They are sweat glands. Found in the dermis (on the left)
What is the sebaceous gland and where is it found?
They are oil glands (sebum). Found in the dermis layer (on the right)
What is the subcutaneous layer made of?
Fatty tissue
What are some things our subcutaneous layer does for us?
- protects us
- keeps us warm
- gives us shape
- protective cushion for our bones
- protects our organs
What are 3 functions of the sudoriferous gland?
- release salt and waste (excretion)
- regulates body temperature (cools is down)
- helps maintain PH level
What is sebum?
A fatty, oily substance that keeps our skin soft and pliable. Overproduction will create oily skin. Underproduction will create dry skin.
What is the acid mantle?
Sebum and sweat mix and spread over the surface of the skin to prevent dirt and bacteria from entering
What are two things skin pigmentation (melanin) does for us?
- gives us Color
- protects us from the sun
What are four types of skin and what is a description of them?
- oily- shiny skin, rough texture, prone to acne, caused by overproduction of sebum, diet
- dry- peeling and flaking, few blemishes,
- normal- fresh, healthy, no blemishes
- combination- mixture of oily and dry, oily areas are t-zone
What is the difference between objective and subjective symptoms?
Objective is something you can see and prove (redness, broken bone). Subjective is something you feel but can’t see (headache, stomachache).
What are six signs of infection?
- redness
- heat (fever)
- pain
- swelling
- throbbing
- pus
What is a primary lesion?
Abnormal changes in the skin
Papules
Hardened red elevations- no fluid present
Vesicles
Fluid filled elevations caused by localized accumulation of fluids or blood just below the epidermis
