1
Q

Misconception: offspring look just like their parents

A

offspring DNA is different bc its individual bt also mixed from parents. Some traits are from parent A while others are from parent B and others are recessive traits from either parent.

Q

Misconception: organisms higher on the food chain/web eat everything below them on the food chain/web

A

not all animals at the top eat things on the bottom. Sharks do not eat grass or jellyfish but other animals do and those are eaten by sharks.

Q

Misconception: fossils are remains of organisms themselves

A

fossils can be imprinted from a species. A rock with a leaf print does not contain the leaf but it shows it once existed

Q

Misconception: seasons are caused by Earths distance from the sun

A

The Earth spins on an axis creating a tilt that sometimes points towards the sun and other times points away

Q

describe the difference between physical and chemical changes and provide an example of each

A

physical changes the appearance and can be reversed (ex: melting water) and chemical changes the composition and cannot be reversed (ex: rust)

Q

Define and describe a magnet using the following terms: magnet, magnetic objects, attract, repel, and poles

A

magnet: metal object with relation to the poles
magnetic object: attract to another
attract: come together, pull
repel: stay apart, push
piles: located at the North and South and pushed or pulls on the electromagnetic field

Q

What type of energy transfer occurred during the balloon car experiment

A

potential to kinetic energy
the potential energy was in the inflated balloon and the kinetic energy was releasing and the car moving

9
Q

How did you see force and friction during the balloon experiment

A

friction caused the car to stop and the force is from the release of the balloon causing a shift of air putting the car in motion

12
Q

what evidence of energy transfer occurred during the bead experiment

A

radiation and ultraviolet energy changed the colors of the bead - covering the beads from the sun protected them from changing color

Q

Name and describe the three terms related to light

A

Transparent: 100% see through, all light passes (ex: glasses)
Translucent: some light passes but no details (ex: sunglasses)
Opaque: no light passed through (ex: brick)

Q

sound waves: describe the difference between volume and pitch

A

the volume changes depending on the height of the waves and the pitch changes with the frequency or space between the waves (number of vibrations)

Q

Define and provide an example for the following: primary consumer, secondary consumer, tertiary consumer, decomposer, and producer

A

Primary consumer: consumes primary producer (ex: cricket)
Secondary consumer: consumers primary producers (ex: mice, rabbit)
Tertiary consumer: consumes primary and secondary producers (ex: snake)
Decomposer: breaks down food to soil (ex: mushroom, fungi)
Producer: produces its own food (ed: grass, flowers)

17
Q

describe the difference between weathering, erosion, and decomposition

A

weather: breaking down material
erosion: transportation of material
decomposition: stops transportation and creates new landforms

18
Q

What causes day and night

A

The earth’s rotation (24 hours). Since the earth is spinning only half of the earth is illuminated causing it to be day where its light and night where its dark

19
Q

explain the earth’s seasons

A

the earth rotates on its axis. as the earth goes around its orbit, certain hemispheres are lit b the sun. Ex: when the northern hemisphere is pointing toward the sun, it is summer and when its pointing away its winter.

20
Q

what causes the different length of days in the summer and winter

A

the sun on the horizon changes as a result of the earths tilt. The sun is more directly above us in the summer and during the winter the sun is on a lower horizon which is a shorter path.

21
Q

what do fossils provide evidence of geological processes over time/past earth lanscapes

A

finding seashells in the desert mean there was once enough water there for aquatic life.

22
Q

difference between lunar and solar eclipses

A

lunar eclipse: moon earth sun
solar eclipse: earth moon sun

23
Q

difference between weather and climate

A

weather is a short term event adn climate is a long term effect of weather and man

24
Q

difference between parallel and series circuits

A

parallel are straight across and series makes a circle
