Final Flashcards
(41 cards)
Which test is best for nematode eggs?
fecal flotation
Which test is best for coccidian oocysts?
fecal flotation
Which test is best for giardia cysts?
Fecal flotation in sugar or salt
media; iodine can help in visualizing
cysts but kills trophozoites
Which test is best for trematode eggs?
sedimentation technique
Which test is best for cestode eggs?
Fecal flotation as long as specific
gravity is high enough
Which test is best for mites?
typically a skin scrape
which test is best for larval tapeworms (e.g. hydatid
cyst, cysticerci, etc.)?
Typically noted at necropsy in the
intermediate host (Definitive Host
will pass eggs!)
which test is best for lungworm larvae?
Typically Baermann technique
which test is best for Cryptosporidium spp. in young
calves?
acid fast staining
life stage passed into environment from Strongyloides stercoralis (in
dogs)
L1 larvae
life stage passed into environment from Strongyloides spp. (in
ruminants)
larvated egg
life stage passed into environment from “Strongyle”-type eggs (e.g.
genera including
Haemonchus, Cooperia,
Trichostrongylus,
Ostertagia,
Oesophagostomum, etc.)
unlarvated egg
life stage passed into environment from Cystoisospora sp. (in small
animals) and Eimeria spp.
(in ruminants)
unsporulated oocysts
life stage passed into environment from Giardia spp. (multiple
hosts)
Cysts (trophozoites die quickly in the
external environment)
life stage passed into environment from Tritrichomonas foetus (in
large and small animals,
wildlife/exotics, etc.)
Trophozoite (this is the only life stage!)
nematodes
Baylisascaris procyonis: Digestive
pigs
- ascaris suum (GI tract, liver lungs), flotation, host ingests larvated eggs, coughed up and swallowed, L4 molts, clinical signs: milk spots
- trichinella spiralis: nematode never sees outside environment, host ingests meat containing encysted larvae, zoonotic.
- metastrongylus sp.: pig lungworm, nematode, earthworm intermediate host (ingests L1)
- hematopinus suis: sucking louse, skin: (jowl, flanks, inside legs),
- sarcoptes scabei: sarcoptiform mite, skin, winding burrow - this is the ufo looking mite!
- demodex phylloides: follicular mite, lesions on ventral abdomen and neck and eylids and snout
nematode
an ascarid is a type of nematode
Which of the following is a lungworm in swine?
A. Metastrongylus
B. Trichinella
C. Ascaris
D. Haematopinus
At the necropsy of a pig you find milky white spots in the liver—which parasite is most likely?”
A. Haemonchus sp.
B. Trichinella spiralis
C. Ascaris suum
D. Metastrongylus sp.
alpacas/ llamas
- Eimeria macusaniensis
*
Brainworm
Parelaphostrongylus tenuis
L1 larvae have a dorsal spine
white tailed deer definitive host
snials and slugs intermediate hosts
can take out the entire moose population
Which of the following genera are more commonly known as “brainworm?”
