Steps of Change
Precontemplation - not really wanting to Contemplation - now wanting to Preparation - changing behaviour Action - things will go wrong Maintenance - need support
Goals should be
meaningful
realistic
specific
progressive
Goals are affected by:
Reinforcement Enjoyment Beliefs Attitudes Intensions
5 C’s for enjoyment…
Competence Challenge Control Choice Commitment
CSEP-PATH 5 Steps
Ask - learn about clinet Assess - physical activity, fitness or psychological assessment Advice - summarize results and discuss Agree - action plan Assist - support
AAL-Q
ability for active living questionnaire
PAR-Q
physical activity readiness questionnaire
PASB-Q
physical activity and sedentary behaviour questionnaire
SOC-Q
stages of change questionnaire
what is the activity inventory
all the activities that you have done and are familiar with doing
5 Principles of prescription:
Overload Progression Specificity Reversibility - mirror image Individuality
Resistance training prescription basics:
frequency - number of times a week intensity - % of 1 RM time - time between reps/sets type training volume - number of reps/sets
Constant compressibility:
thickness of compressed double layer of skin and subcutaneous fat
ex) really low in the thigh
Skin thickness constant fraction of skinfold:
thickness of uncompressed double layer of skin and subcutaneous fat
ex) really high in subscapular
want a low skin thickness
Fixed adipose patterning:
thickness of subcutaneous fat without skin
Constant fat fraction in adipose tissue:
mass of total subcutaneous fat
just because the thickness of fold is the same doesn’t mean that the % adipose is still the same (60-85%)
fixed proportion of internal to external fat
total mass of subcutaneous fat
Physical activity:
any body movement that increases energy expediture
Physical fitness:
set of characteristics that relates to ability to perform physical activity. can be general or specific
Health related fitness:
components of fitness that exhibit relationship with health status (aerobic, msk and functional fitness) - what we have been measuring in class
Performance related fitness:
physical training for specific task like a sport or a physically demanding job
What are the determinants of health?
1) Social and economic environment - education, employment and income are all related. The more money have the better your health. The more educated you are the better your health.

5) Health serves - depending where you are and if there is armed conflict to, different healthcare
Obesity is expensive for:
the healthcare system
and for the obese people because they are missing work because of their diseases caused by obesity
