Gerbert of Aurillac (Sylvester II) (940-1003)

Part of the Revival of Learning.
Started as a monk – he was a scholar
Teaching at Reims between 972-980 and was greatly interested in mathematical questions.
Elected pope in 999 and took on the name of Sylvester II – made a valiant but unsuccessful effort to reform the papacy as well as the entire church.
