Special Economic Zones
An area dedicated to a certain type of industry, in where the country of origin makes laws, which makes it easier for businesses to bring their jobs to foreign countries.
Human Development Index
A measurement of well being in a country that includes things like health, education, gender equality, good health care, etc. (Not just how rich/poor a country is).
Crony capitalism
The leader of a country gives favorable treatment to his friends and/or family. (Crony = Friends)
Sikhism
An Indian religion combining Islamic and Hindu elements, founded in the Punjab region in the late 15th century. Most of the people of Punjab still practice this religion.
Green Revolution
Highly productive agricultural techniques developed in the 1960’s that entail the use of new hybrid plant varieties combined with large applications of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. This term is usually used to describe agricultural changes in developing areas.
The Partition
The division of south Asia into India and Pakistan (and East Pakistan). Where India became the home for Hindus and Pakistan the home for Muslims.
Domino theory
A U.S. geopolitical policy that stemmed from the assumption that if Vietnam fell to the Communists, the rest of southeast Asia soon would follow.
Shifting cultivation
Also known as “swidden”; cutting the forest down in one area, piling up all the trees and burning them so the nutrients are released into the soil. Crops are planted in the newly fertile soil. Soil is sustainable for a few years, and then loses its nutrients. This type of agriculture is most successful if there is a small population to feed and lots of land to use.
Primate city
The largest urban settlement in a country that dominates all other urban places, economically and politically. (Example: New York City)
Lingua franca
An agreed upon common language to facilitate communication on specific topics such as politics, education, and media.
Linguistic nationalism
The promotion of one language over another, linked to shared notions of nationalism. In India some advocates promote Hindi as the national language while it is resisted by many other groups.
Transmigration
A development plan in Indonesia to move some people from Java to other islands in order to spread the population out more sufficiently.
Invasive species
a species that evolved in a different environment where it had to compete with lots of predators and is brought to a new place where it has no predators, and hunting becomes so easy that they wipe out other species.
High islands
large volcanic island with high elevation.
White Australia Policy
A policy where only white Europeans and North Americans were allowed to immigrate to Australia.
Microstates
Independent states that are small in size and population.
Hindu Nationalism
The act of Indians to make Hinduism a national identity of India.
Outsourcing
Where one country transports their labor to another country that has cheaper labor (Example: Delta outsources their call centers to India). India is great for outsourcing because they speak English, have lots of labor, and are highly educated.
Melanesia
Pacific Ocean region that includes the generally darker skinned peoples of New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, New Caledonia, and Fiji.
Polynesia
Pacific Ocean region that includes the Hawaiian islands, Marquesas, Society Islands, Tuamotu, Cook Islands, American Samoa, Samoa, Tonga, and Kiribati.
Micronesia
Mariana Islands, Marshall Islands, and Micronesia.
